Product detailed description
CEA stands for carcinoembryonic antigen, which is a protein that can be present in the body under certain conditions. Measuring the level of CEA in the blood is often used as a nonspecific marker for monitoring certain types of cancer, particularly colorectal carcinoma. However, CEA is not specific only to colorectal cancer, and its level can be elevated in other conditions as well.
What happens to the body with abnormal CEA levels:
Cancer: Elevated levels of CEA are often associated with certain types of cancer, especially colorectal carcinoma. However, it is important to note that CEA levels cannot serve as the sole diagnostic tool for cancer. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC): HCC is a form of liver cancer. In some patients with hepatocellular carcinoma, CEA levels may be elevated, but this correlation is not as direct as in the case of colorectal carcinoma. Defects of the fetal neural tube: Sometimes, measuring CEA levels is also performed in prenatal testing, especially in evaluating possible defects of the fetal neural tube. Here, elevated CEA levels may indicate problems with the development of the fetal nervous system. It is important to emphasize that elevated CEA levels are not specific to a single disease and can be caused by other factors, such as inflammation or benign tumors. Based on increased CEA levels, a doctor may decide to perform further diagnostic tests to confirm or exclude the presence of cancer or other conditions. Interpretation of the results should always take into account the overall clinical picture of the patient and should be done in collaboration with a physician.
